Photo by Beverlie Lord Alice Sheppard is founder of Kinetic Light, an organization working in the disciplines of art, design, architecture, and social justice, that creates, performs, and teaches at the intersections of disability, dance, and race. Their work seeks to showcase freedom of movement as a pathway for others to understand how mobility is fundamental to participation in civic life and to our understanding of American national identity. Alice became a member of Fractured Atlas in July 2016 and is based in Los Altos, California and New York City.

Laura Brody, founder of Opulent Mobility and one of her sculptures Opulent Mobility has been a Fractured Atlas fiscally-sponsored project since September 2017. Its mission is to re-imagine disability, mobility, and access as opulent, powerful, and personal. Based in Altadena, California, Opulent Mobility produces art, mounts group exhibits, and holds workshops that start conversations about new ways to approach disability and its devices. The project has been hosted in Ventura (2013), Northridge (2015), and Hollywood, California (2018). The next two exhibits will be in New Jersey (2019) and Culver City (2020).

The D/deaf and hard-of-hearing community are still underserved by online video and audio providers, and many websites are still not friendly to screen readers used by people who are blind or low vision. There are still a variety of barriers to using Fractured Atlas’s services, but we’re working on it, and thanks to our time during All Hands and our work with Equity Quotient, we’re growing our understanding and implementation of access.
