This past Valentine's Day, Fractured Atlas was struck by cupid's bow and commissioned artist Lara Antal to write a love letter on a subject of their choosing. Lara went above and beyond, creating a collage that blends typewritten words, digital elements, and soft notebook sketches. We hope you enjoy this letter as much as we did!

Imagine a scientist working on a new, cutting-edge technology. When you picture her, she’s probably working in a research lab or at a university, right? Despite all the shows and movies that suggest otherwise, scientists don’t work in their basements — they work within institutions, because it opens up funding avenues for their projects. It might shock you to hear that similar, tax-exempt funding avenues exist for artists. If a project you’re working on 1) is artistic and 2) has a public benefit, you could use fiscal sponsorship to apply for funding from corporations and foundations, collect tax-deductible donations, and access nonprofit discounts. My phone recently broke in a very particular and life-changing way. Every three minutes on the dot, the screen goes pitch black, the phone shuts down, and then immediately turns back on again as if nothing ever happened. While this doesn’t affect any core functionality, like sending a text or placing a bulk order of fresh churros — the most essential things you can accomplish with a smartphone in under three minutes — it did provide some much-needed relief from the endless doomscrolling experience that’s come to define our online lives.
