This quarter’s theme on Inciter Art is: come back to yourself. Have you been caught in the riptide of productivity culture? Stuck in an infinite doomscroll? Now’s the time to come back to every part of yourself: artist, worker, child, caretaker, rebel, fighter. Parts we can often leave by the wayside in the name of practicality or duty. For the next three months, we’ll be navigating the choppy waters of technology, attention, breaking up with your art job — in other words, by your side as you rediscover your true north and set sail.

I’m in the process of teaching my two young kids how to play with blocks. All kinds of sets: Legos, Magna-Tiles, wooden blocks with animal faces on them. One block on its own may not have much function or purpose — unless you count having a funny face that makes your kid chuckle a purpose, which I definitely do count. But combined with the other blocks in the set, they take on a collective capability. Strength in numbers. It takes a village. Community. These are tried and true phrases and concepts. And if you are a working artist, building a funding community can not only make your creative practice more sustainable, but it can provide enriching benefits — not just monetary — for you and the people who generously make up your funding community.

I’m not an expert on anything. I may have some deeper knowledge in certain areas, like where to find artist opportunities or how to find your next book to read, but really I’m just a forty-year old father of two looking for ways to make it all work: parenting, partnering, homeowning, and artmaking. That’s just me, but I know I share a lot in common with the working artists who read this blog. Maybe like you, I feel the scarcity of money, time, and bandwidth. Maybe like you, I put a lot of undue pressure on myself to get things right all the time. And maybe like you, I long for an alternative, a flipping of the switch, a key that will unlock the mysteries of what it means to be a human in this world.

As we awaited the arrival of our second child, my wife and I decided that it was time to look for a house. We were renting a small, two-bedroom house that felt close to bursting at the seams with toys, clothes, and the equipment one accumulates when caring for a small child, so the prospect of squeezing in another baby felt a bit too much like a circus act. Plus our lease was running out and we really didn’t like our landlord (a story for another time).

Years ago, I had a roommate who built sets for local theater productions. I would come home from a closing shift and he would be painting a sign for some make-believe business. I would get back from the movies and he’d be hammering nails into some crude, unfinished structure. I wondered what it was like to move through the day the way he did, from project to project, seemingly paying little to no attention to what time of day it was, whether it was time to eat lunch or go to bed.
