Nicole DeMaio and members of Black Sheep Contemporary Ensemble

Nicole DeMaio is the founder of Black Sheep Contemporary Ensemble, a collaborative project dedicated to performing music by living or recently deceased composers throughout the Greater Boston Area for a variety of audiences. The ensemble accomplishes this through their Four Core Goals: Perform, Collaborate, Commission, and Educate. Over the past four years, the ensemble has worked with visual artists, dancers and choreographers to create new works. Black Sheep Contemporary Ensemble has been a Fractured Atlas member since July 2017.

How has Fractured Atlas benefitted your artistic practice?
Being able to accept donations and grants through Fractured Atlas has helped us to pay numerous musicians for performing with us and find spaces to hold our events and rehearsals.

How has Fractured Atlas benefitted your revenue/income generation?Fractured Atlas has benefited Black Sheep by allowing us to apply for grants to fund our projects. We’ve received several from The City of Boston which were only made possible by being members. We also just recently finished a fundraising campaign on the site, helping us to fund the rest of our current season.

What specific Fractured Atlas services/programs have you used?
We have received donations through our member page and have run a fundraiser through the site. We also regularly use the SpaceFinder feature when booking rehearsals and concerts.

Why do you think artists and organizations should become members of Fractured Atlas?
Fractured Atlas is a great first step for smaller artistic groups and projects to help you begin to collect donations and apply for grants that require you to have a fiscal sponsor.

What is your biggest accomplishment as a result of being a Fractured Atlas member?
Our biggest accomplishment was receiving our first grant from The City of Boston. It funded our entire first season!
