Upcoming Artist Grants and Opportunities: February 2023 Deadlines

Every month, Fractured Atlas provides a list of upcoming grants and opportunities for artists and arts-based projects so that you can discover more opportunities to get financial support and other resources for your work. As a fiscal sponsor of over 3,500 artistic projects, we provide access to grants for artists in every discipline.

Immersion 5.0 Residency

The IMMERSION Lab is a combination of a virtual reality creation residency and an invitation for artists to engage the racial history of America within the context of a southern city: Wilmington, North Carolina. We are seeking participants who have capacity to engage in an intensive production schedule, interest in developing skills and familiarity with immersive media and 360 video, and a desire to do anti-racist work within media production.

The Virginia A. Groot Foundation

The Virginia A. Groot Foundation Grant was established so that ceramic sculpture artists or sculptors of diverse mediums may have the opportunity to devote a substantial period of time to the development of his or her own work. The foundation awards three grant tiers annually: first place– $60,000; second place– $30,000 and third place–$20,000. Applicants must be 21 years or older at the time of the application deadline. The foundation aims to financially support artist expenses to live, travel, and create.

StudioWorks Artist-In-Residence

 The StudioWorks Artist-in-Residence Program at the Tides Institute & Museum of Art (TIMA) offers residency opportunities to visual artists from the U.S. and abroad to deepen and develop their practice within a community setting. Studios, museum and housing are located within the historic downtown and working waterfront of Eastport, Maine and overlook the U.S./Canada boundary. TIMA’s downtown StudioWorks building contains private studios, common work areas, and a ground floor printmaking and letterpress studio.

2023-2024 Writing and Visual Arts Fellowship

The Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown has supported emerging writers and artists for over 50 years, granting 10 annual fellowships to visual artists and 10 annual fellowships to writers for a seven-month residency that runs from October 1 - April 30. Visual Arts Fellows are provided with a private furnished apartment and a separate work studio of approximately 400 sq ft. Fellows are awarded a $1250 monthly stipend plus a $1000 exit stipend to support relocation at the end of the Fellowship.

Barnard Library Research Award

The Barnard Library will award $3000 to two researchers to support their use of its Archives, Zine Library and other collections/resources. The award aims to expand access to the Barnard Collections for researchers working on projects that support access, equity, inclusion and social justice. Undergraduate and graduate students, non-Barnard faculty (including adjuncts and term faculty), journalists, and independent scholars (including artists and organizers) are encouraged to apply.

WAVE FARM RESIDENCY PROGRAM

In 2023, the Wave Farm Residency Program will emphasize “feral frequencies,” prioritizing proposals that employ and/or activate less commonly used frequencies within the radio spectrum and the electromagnetic spectrum at large. Applicants are invited to propose visual and sonic projects that fall within the Transmission Arts genre. Residencies span 10 days and take place June through October.Each residency will receive a $1,000 artist fee.

Cranberry Lake Biological Station Indigenous Writer in Residency 

The Cranberry Lake Biological Station residency is open to Indigenous writers over 21 years of age who write poetry, plays/screenplays, fiction/short stories, and/or nonfiction. Three-week residency slots are available each year, with some flexibility based on the writer’s schedule: May 22 – June 10, June 12 – July 1, July 17 – August 5. Housing, a private room with shared living space, three meals a day are provided at the station dining hall, and a workspace will be provided. The resident will also have access to all facilities including canoes, classroom spaces, microscopes, and the ability to join classes if desired. Additional needs are requests that will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Artist Entrepreneurial Grant 

Artist Entrepreneurial Grants support opportunities that will benefit artists’ careers and small businesses, including the development of business skills, participation in programs to raise the level and quality of their art, and participation in programs that will bring their art to the widest possible programs. Individual  professional New Hampshire artists, makers, and creatives, 18 years of age or over, who devote a majority of their time to practicing, performing and/or teaching an arts discipline. Applicants must also have been in New Hampshire for one full year and still be residents at the time grants are awarded may apply.

Macdowell Residencies

MacDowell provides time, space, and an inspiring environment to artists of exceptional talent. A MacDowell Fellowship, or residency, consists of exclusive use of a studio, accommodations, and three prepared meals a day for up to six weeks. There are no residency fees. Macdowell accepts applications from artists working in the following disciplines: architecture, film/video arts, interdisciplinary arts, literature, music composition, theatre, and visual arts. Macdowell encourages applications from artists representing the widest possible range of perspectives and demographics, and welcomes artists engaging in the broadest spectrum of artistic practice and investigating an unlimited array of inquiries and concerns.

Traditional Arts Touring Grants 

The Traditional Arts Touring Grant Program works to increase public awareness, understanding, and appreciation of the traditional arts in the South, through funding projects that bring a traditional artist/ensemble for a residency of two or more days in Southern communities. This funding program is open to a wide variety of organizations, including community cultural organizations, schools/colleges/universities, libraries, museums, performing arts presenters, etc. Although only these organizations are eligible to apply, the program funds activities that serve both communities and traditional artists.

NXTHVN Year-Long Fellowship

Each year NXTHVN welcomes up to seven artists and two curators to participate in its paid 10-month intensive Fellowship Program. Each fellow will receive studio or office space, a stipend, and subsidized housing. Selected from an international pool of applicants, fellows relocate to New Haven to participate in NXTHVN’s mentorship-driven curriculum which includes professional development sessions led by visiting artists, curators, scholars, and practitioners. Selected fellows are also matched with a high school apprentice, for focused one-on-one mutual learning, which gives the next local generation a chance to grow and excel in creative fields. The fellowship year culminates with an annual group show at a prominent gallery space.

TIDAL SHIFT AWARD

The Tidal Shift Award aims to leverage the power of socially-aware artworks, awarding and platforming teenagers and young adults who are focused on solutions for climate change. Currently accepting submissions of artworks that relate to the climate crisis through theme, subject matter, solutions, and more. Artists between the ages 14-22 are eligible to apply. Young artists of any ethnic or racial identity, gender identity, sexual orientation and ability are encouraged to apply.

Mother’s Milk Residency 

Mother’s Milk is a 2-6 week interdisciplinary residency, designed to support three or four visual or sound artists, or creative writers, who are pursuing innovative work in their field. The goal of this program is to provide individuals or collaborators with the time and space to pursue their creative projects alongside other residents whose different perspectives, backgrounds and interests offer inspiration and interaction. Work that is more experimental in nature without regard to commercial viability is of special interest. Residents will be exceptional creative practitioners – including emerging, mid-career a​nd established artists – who desire time and space to work on their projects.

Rauschenberg Dancer Emergency Grants 

The Rauschenberg Dancer Emergency Grants program provides one-time grants of up to $5,000 to professional dancers in need who have a dire financial emergency due to the COVID-19 pandemic and its consequences. The grants are available to dancers in financial need who are currently residing in the United States, District of Columbia, U.S. Territories and Tribal Nations.

Anderson Ranch Artists in Residence Program

Anderson Ranch’s Artists-in-Residence Program fosters creative, intellectual and professional growth for emerging and established visual artists. Residents have access to world-class facilities and studio time, free from everyday pressures. Residencies are offered in ceramics, new media, photography, furniture design, woodworking, painting, drawing, printmaking and sculpture.

2023 Art + Technology Lab Grant

LACMA’s Art + Technology Lab is now accepting proposals for artist projects, with awards of up to $50,000 as well as in-kind support from the museum and private partners in technology and science. Grant recipients are encouraged to pursue new directions in their work that explore ideas in technology and culture. Preference is given to projects that are speculative in nature and provide opportunities for public engagement through outputs such as performances, demonstrations, workshops, and research lectures.

Sustainable Arts Parent-Friendly Residencies

The Sustainable Arts Foundation supports artists and writers with children. This year, they will make awards of $5,000 each to 20 artists and writers with children, plus 20 finalists. The awards offered are unrestricted and recipients can use the funds as they see fit. To be eligible, the applicant must have at least one child under the age of 18. Parents of older children with a disability or special needs may also be eligible.

Trillium Arts Artist Residency

Trillium Arts envisions an artist residency center where artists of many disciplines can find a creative home away from home, offering secluded space for rejuvenation in a beautiful, remote setting in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Their current facilities are best suited to the disciplines of literary arts, photography, visual arts and arts administration. All 2023 residencies are one week in length.

New Voices Filmmaker Grant 
NewFest’s New Voices Filmmaker Grant, in partnership with Netflix, supports emerging LGBTQ+ directors by providing funding to make new work, assisting in getting their work more widely shared, and propelling their careers forward through mentorship, networking and professional development opportunities. The Grant seeks to support the creation of work from underrepresented voices in the film industry, and awarded a $25,000 grant each to 4 director recipients who have not yet had their work distributed.

WeHO Muralist Roster 

Any business or commercial development interested in placing a mural on a wall, building, construction site or other location in West Hollywood, must use an artist approved by the City.  Approved artists will be placed on the WEHO Muralist Roster as a resource for anyone seeking an artist for a mural project. The intent of the roster is to provide users with a range of artistic styles from which to select an artist that fits the need of a particular project. Early and mid-career artists are encouraged to apply.
