Piper Anderson is a storyteller, coach, master facilitator, and founder of Create Forward, a social impact firm delivering creative experiences that advance equity and justice. In 2018, she co-founded the Rikers Public Memory Project, an oral history project documenting the legacy of Rikers Island through the narratives of generations of New Yorkers who have experience with the penal colony.

For ten years, I led arts programs in Rikers Island with my NYU students. Each Saturday morning, I crossed the bridge on the Q100 bus, staring out at the murky waters of the East River, gathering my resolve to enter a penal colony, the last of its kind, to transform a prison classroom into a space of community, creativity, and belonging.
